In an age of widespread ideological confusion, sectarianism and war, there is a paramount need for emotional stability and intellectual clarity in our communities across the world.
When we look at the world, we are bombarded with images of blood being spilt, anger vented at murderous atrocities being committed and the abject silence of those in power to the gross injustices we witness. The layman in reaction turns to leadership and scholastic guidance as a reference point to often find more imbalanced responses which continue the perpetual cycle.
In Islam, forbearance (hilm) in a sense, governs the other requisite virtues such as temperance, compassion, and modesty. Forbearance should manifest itself throughout a Muslim’s life in every ethical circumstance or dilemma. While the Quran acknowledges an individual’s tendency toward anger and impatience in situations of conflict, it provides clear guidance for mankind by establishing restraint and mercy as most pleasing to God.
Muslims consider Prophet Muhammad ﷺ character and example the perfect model of virtue and is considered an exemplar of clemency. By many biographical accounts, his inherently gentle disposition coupled with his sense of extreme tolerance and restraint changed the course of history. This is an integral Prophetic trait that is seemingly absent from individuals and communities when they try to safely navigate in a world of turmoil.
Ustadh Usama Canon & Micah Anderson (Ta’leef Collective) will be embarking on a 6 day tour of England, sharing experiences of their travels, knowledge and wisdom they have learnt from the righteous teachers they have taken from. Their aim will be to disseminate teachings of mutual co-existence, the rules of engagement and how to best adhere to the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in all spheres of our lives, as we try to plant deep roots to build positively integrated communities for the future in the west.
